The UK produces over 780.000 tonnes of fava beans waste annually. While the beans are exported to Egypt, the shells stay behind in landfills releasing huge quantities of CO2 and methane.
I designed a fully biodegradable material to tackle this growing waste stream. Through an iterative process, I developed a recipe and found applications for my new material - BEANCRETE.
The material is open-source, so it can be made in any kitchen, but it has the potential to be scaled to drastically reduce Fava Bean waste in the UK and globally.
