Transforming Fava Bean waste into a new circular material

January 2022

The UK produces over 780.000 tonnes of fava beans waste annually. While the beans are exported to Egypt, the shells stay behind in landfills releasing huge quantities of CO2 and methane.

I designed a fully biodegradable material to tackle this growing waste stream. Through an iterative process, I developed a recipe and found applications for my new material - BEANCRETE.

The material is open-source, so it can be made in any kitchen, but it has the potential to be scaled to drastically reduce Fava Bean waste in the UK and globally.

Investigating designs role in reaching a circular economy

November 2021

The responsibility to be sustainable is too often placed on the individial.

Designers are in an important position at the beginning of a products life-cycle, but how much impact can product designers have, and what are some practical approaches?

In my dissertation I explore the concept of CE, the problems with the linear “take-make-waste” model and the role of material innovation.

My depth of inquiry and forensic analyis has gained me an A+ for my dissertation.

BELLBOT

Never lug your luggage around again

May 2021

An autonomous luggage-collection service for an ageing popupation that wants to travel more than ever.

The BellBot picks up heavy luggage before the flight, bringing the check-in counter to the doorstep. This removes pain points from the aiport experience and increases accessibilty for air travel.

Research has shown that older demographics are slower to adopt new technologies like autonomous vehicles. This service creates a touchpoint with AV technology which could increase trust and acceptance.
